Acids in skincare – how do they benefit us and what acid for which skin type?

So today we are going to be looking at skincare. I’m a very firm believer that it all starts with a good skincare routine. You keep consistent with a good routine you will find your skin clearer, healthier brighter and your make up will sit well on the skin.

We all hear about vital ingredients in our skincare products but how many of you know what they do,  and which skin type they are suitable for. Working in the skincare and make up industry I have a reasonable understanding of it all,  I have also been doing some research about it too and have come up with this blog to help you understand what to look for in your skincare.

Just a quick disclaimer – this is a guide and information only, everyone’s skin is different and doesn’t always react well to certain ingredients/products. Shop around to find to the best product that works well for you. 

 

So lets start with……..

Glycolic Acid – This ingredient exfoliates skin and reduces fine lines. It is also good for  hyperpigmentation, dark spots and uneven skin tone.

So which skin type is Glycolic acid suitable for? – Actually for all skin types. Its particularly great for those of us with fine lines and wrinkles.

Salicylic Acid – This ingredient will exfoliate the skin, clears pores (it can do this as it can penetrate deeper into the pore lining), it can treat breakouts ( by reducing sebum secretion) and will build elastin and collagen, so will help plump and firm the skin.

Which skin type is this ingredient suitable for? This ingredient is great for those of us with combination skin or oily/acne prone skin.

Hyaluronic acid – This ingredient Hydrates and plump the skin by drawing in moisture from its surrounding environment. This ingredient is suitable for all skin types. However it definitely benefits those of us with dry or acne prone skin – if you needed an oil free option.

Citric Acid- Speeds up cell renewal and balances skins P.H. Citric acid is best for hyperpigmented skin with dark spots. Citric Acid will agitate sensitive skin.

Last but not least……….

Lactic Acid – This ingredient exfoliates, and speeds up naturally occurring cell turnover. This is suitable for all skin types particularly those with acne scaring.

I hope this has helped you in some way, as I have mentioned before please be aware everyone is different so although a particular acid/ingredient is suitable for the skin type you have it doesnt mean to say that it will be.
